After a standout college football career as an overachieving free safety and with graduation looming, academic whiz kid Walter Kross is waxing nostalgic about his days at Virginia’s tradition-rich Franklin & Victoria. While Walt gears up for life in the real world as a junior consultant in metro Washington D.C. for a military contractor, he meets Amy, a lovely young Vietnamese-American townie. Meanwhile, Walt’s roommate, teammate and best buddy, DerMont Washington, an Atlanta Falcons draft pick, is prepping eagerly for a career as an NFL cornerback.
Walt wants to chase his dual dreams of travel and as-yet unidentified entrepreneurial aspirations, but the well-heeled Richmond native feels familial pressure to take the more conventional route that so many of his classmates have also chosen. But the brash DerMont counsels his preppy pal that contentment is not found by following the herd.
After hearing an inspirational speech at an awards ceremony for top graduating F&V seniors, Walt is inspired to throw caution to the wind and pass on the plum consulting gig. But a bizarre, very public interaction with a visiting professor at this same reception unwittingly turns upside down the lives of the aforementioned trio.
The Stage features witty banter, romance and sarcasm as a diverse troika of college-aged characters navigates a cleverly-formatted world replete with (initially unrecognized) time travel and a shadowy, villainous enemy of freedom and self-determination. While the series’ overarching goal is to illustrate the price Americans corporately pay for abdicating to the state liberties both financial and social, the microscopic details of the opus provide a highly-entertaining adventure sure to captivate readers with interests in history, philosophy, comedy, romance, sports and politics.
Author A.P. Harreld is a multitalented creative communications specialist with a background in stand-up and improvisational comedy, talk radio, sports broadcasting and thoroughbred race track announcing. The series features profanity, violence and sexual innuendo and is recommended for adroit readers ages 16 and older.
